Alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2M) is a naturally occurring molecule in our blood stream. It’s job is to bind catabolic (destructive) enzymes in order to decrease joint inflammation. Many people with arthritis have joint swelling that is due to inflammation within the joint and synovial lining. In a process involving a simple in-office blood draw and then processing, Dr. Rolnik can isolate and concentrate a patient’s own A2M and inject into an inflamed joint via ultrasound guidance. Once the inflammation is under control the pain in the majority of patients will subside. Fluid from your knee can be sent to a lab to assess the likelihood of benefit.
